afternoon film event

Our screening of 'Red Joan' at Tolson Museum told the story of Joan Stanley,  a widow living out a quiet retirement in the suburbs when, shockingly, the British Secret Service places her under arrest. The charge: providing classified scientific information - including details on the building of the atomic bomb - to the Soviet government for decades. As the interrogation gets underway, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and her beliefs.

Moulin Rouge - silent film with live piano accompaniment by Jonny Best in partnership with Yorkshire Silent Film Festival

In the "city of temptation", at the world's most decadent cabaret, the most alluring of all the artistes is Parysia. Everyone worships at her feet... including André, the fickle fiancé of Parysia's daughter Margaret...

More than seventy years before Baz Lurhman's film starring Nicole Kidman, this is one of the last and most lavish British silent films, made by the great German director E.A. Dupont. Glamorous, gripping and emotional, this spectacular film will be brought to life by acclaimed silent film pianist Jonny Best.
Dir. Ewald Andre Dupont | UK/Germany | 1928 | cert PG | b&w, tinted & toned | 2h 17m | English intertitles.
With: Olga Tschechowa, Eve Gray, Jean Bradin
